This page will act as a library to faciliate the improvement of library resources and interconnectedness among literature search engines.

In particular it will focus on e-books resources and the relationship between CLIO and science article search engines.

Below are several journal articles that have been difficult to access through SciFinder, CLIO, ISI Web of Knowledge, Science Direct, or a combination thereof.

Our goal would be to link the Columbia resources such that it would be possible to be made aware of article availability from one electronic resource to another.

SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS:

The ideal is to find a citation, click the e-link icon, and go directly to the full text. Instead, what we have (most of the time) is:

  1. Find citation, click e-link;
  2. See a screen telling you if full text is available online (with link to it, if found)
  3. Link to search CLIO if full text not found
  4. If CLIO search works, try to figure out what you're seeing and where the volume you want is.
  5. If it's in the Chemistry library, go see if it's on the shelf and make a photocopy.
  6. If it's Offsite, fill out the request form (filling in the citation over again) and get it delivered electronically.

We can't get to the ideal in all cases, but here are some steps we can try. I don't want to promise these right away, but the first few at least should be feasible, and the others are things we'll look into:

  1. fix up data, so linking works in more cases. (This is an ongoing effort.)
  2. work with publishers to do the same. (E.g., so we can link to specific articles instead of just to Optics Infobase; another ongoing effort)
  3. change e-link so that when full text is found the connection is made automatically, without the intervening screen)
  4. change e-link so that when full text is not found, the CLIO search happens automatically.
  5. in some cases, consolidate CLIO records and holdings so they're not so confusing.

  6. Now things get harder:
  7. when e-link finds no full text, match the citation against our Offsite holdings and if found populate the request form automatically.
  8. when e-link finds no full text and CLIO finds no results, populate an InterLibrary Loan form automatically (This actually happens now, but only if you choose the ILL option in e-link.)

    • Bob Wolven says: For now, the answer given is the best way to get the article; not available online, CLIO (eventually) leads to the volume in the Chemistry library.

    • Bob Wolven says: We've made a modification so e-link now connects to Optics Infobase, but not to the article itself; you need to repeat the search there. May be possible to improve this (see above)

    • Bob Wolven says: Very frustrating. There are over 2 dozen ways to subscribe to parts of it online (and we have 11 of them) but none cover the period from 1909-1986. CLIO shows this volume is Offsite.

    • Bob Wolven says: Molecular crystals is indeed an earlier title for Molecular crystals and liquid crystals; in the Chemistry library as noted on the web page. (Here's the full, ugly history of this title and related journals.) This early volume is available online, but we haven't subscribed to the backfile yet. We've fixed the CLIO record so the CLIO search from e-link now at least pulls up the title.
