Effectively Searching for Synthetic Methods

(1) Bielstein:
Bielstein is software that can br downloaded from the Chemistry Library website and installed on your computer. It gives you the ability to connect to an online database and pull out information regarding the synthesis of a compound, the physical properties, characterization data, and all relevant references. It offers the ability to search using structures as a starting material, product, or any reagent in a reaction and find all reactions that match the criteria. You can also specify both the starting material and product and find all relevant reactions. Once a compound is located in the database, the information will be presented as hits. Within each hit, reactions are given, and physical properties (bp, mp, etc.) and characterization data using different instruments (esr, nmr, mass spec, uv, etc.) is given too.

(2) Scifinder:
Search by chemical substance, reaction, product, chemical structure, author, etc. Relevant references are then displayed and can be sorted. We can also obtain information on commercial resources of compounds.

(3) Vogel’s Textbook of Practical Organic Chemistry ( Fifth edition1989):
Contents: experimental techniques; spectroscopic methods and the interpretation of spectra; purification of common organic solvents and reagents; examples of synthesis procedures of various organic compounds; and physical constants of organic compounds.

(4) Comprehensive Organic Synthesis (Pergamon Press) Vol 1-9 (1991):
mainly reactions. Author and subject indexes.

(5) Handbook of Chemistry and Physics:

The references in ‘physical constants of organic compounds’ section gave resources of the compound

(6) Dictionary of Organic Compound: (Chapman & Hall) Vol.1-9, sixth edition (1996).

Us CAS registry number index; molecular formula index, and name index. Contents: name; molecule structure; registry number, references for synthesis of the compound and its derivatives; physical constants and spectra.

(7) Organic Synthesis (John Wiley & Sons. Inc) Vo1. 1(1941) to Vol. 9 (1998):
The synthesis procedures contain apparatus, discussion, and references. Indexes: type of reaction; type of compounds; formula; author; general. Reaction Guide(equations). Bolded words indicate end products, while regular words indicate reaction reagent. The collective indices to collective all previous volumes.

(8) Chemical Abstract:
formula index; substances index; registry number index.

(9) Other Useful Resources:
- Reagents for organic Syntheses (John Wiley &Sons Inc) Vol. 1-20.
- Encyclopedia of Reagent for Organic Synthesis” (John Wiley & Sons Inc) Vol. 1-8
- Organic Reactions (John Wiley &Sons Inc) Vol. 1-60.
